Bangkok to Chiang Mai: A Road Trip Guide

Bangkok to Chiang Mai: A Road Trip Guide

January 5, 2026

The drive from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is one of Thailand's most iconic road trips, covering roughly 700 kilometres through the country's stunning heartland. Here's everything you need to plan an unforgettable journey.

Route overview. The most popular route follows Highway 1 (Phahonyothin Road) north through Ayutthaya and Nakhon Sawan before joining Highway 32 and eventually Highway 11 into Chiang Mai. The drive takes approximately 8-10 hours without extended stops.

Best time to go. The cool season (November to February) offers the most pleasant driving conditions with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Avoid the peak of the hot season (March-April) when haze from agricultural burning can reduce visibility in the north.

Must-stop destinations. Break the journey at Ayutthaya, Thailand's ancient capital, to explore the stunning temple ruins (about 1.5 hours from Bangkok). Further north, Nakhon Sawan sits at the confluence of two rivers and is perfect for a lunch stop. Kamphaeng Phet and Tak offer quieter historical sites away from the tourist crowds.

Overnight options. For a more relaxed trip, consider spending a night in Sukhothai, home to another magnificent UNESCO World Heritage historical park. It's roughly the halfway point and makes the journey much more enjoyable than trying to complete it in one long drive.

Arriving in Chiang Mai. Once in Chiang Mai, the old city's moat and ancient walls make navigation easy. The city is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding mountains, visiting hill tribe villages, and experiencing northern Thai culture and cuisine.

Vehicle recommendation. We recommend a comfortable sedan like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord for this highway journey. If you plan to explore mountain roads around Chiang Mai, an SUV like the Honda CR-V provides extra ground clearance and confidence on winding routes.
